Judgment versus Observation Exercise

A resource for The Compassion Course

The statements below include judgments. Write down what might be said to make them judgment free as follows:

Example:  “I felt frustrated when I saw you rush out of the room.”

Example Rewrite: “When you left the room, I felt frustrated.”

1) You’re not being responsive to our family.

2) This wine is terrible.

3) The front room is always messy.

4) I’m really feeling unheard in this conversation.

5) We’re never going to get out of here on time.

Harvesting/Discussion

When you are finished, notice any difference in your reaction to the original statement versus the revised statements with observations? It may be fun to share this with others through our Community Forum.
